Contemporary Japanese Auteurs: Sleep (18) S
Dir: Katsumi Sakaguchi
Cast: Mariko Hirano, Aimi Kobayashi, Miyuki Komagata 96 mins, 2011, Japan, Subtitled
Please note: this was screened in March 2012
This grippingly strange and disturbingly dark drama revolves around Kotono (Mariko Harino) a masseuse who has dedicated her life since her rape, aged fifteen, to finding her attacker. She lives a nomadic life with her highly dysfunctional family (her crippled father and a daughter born of the rape) but they all share a tender, loving bond. Left speech impaired ever since her attack, her daughter acts as her agent and attends all of her mother's appointments - even if she is hired for sex. With the money they save, however, they hire a private detective to find her rapist and one day, they close in on him: how will they exact their revenge? An edgy, often uncomfortable look at the length people go to achieve retribution.
Fee: £7.20 full / £5.60 concessions.
