Contemporary Japanese Auteurs: About Her Brother (PG) S
Dir: Yoji Yamada
Cast: Sayuri Yoshinaga, Tsurube Shofukutei, Yu Aoi, Ryo Kase 126 mins, 2010, Japan , Subtitled
Please note: this was screened in March 2012
At the centre of this family drama is Ginko (Sayuri Yoshinaga), a kindly widow who has a bottomless love for her unruly black sheep of brother Tetsuro (Tsurube Shofukutei, also seen in Dear Doctor) despite a catalogue of bad points (getting blind drunk at his niece's wedding, for one, embarassing the whole family and ruining the day). When she discovers Tetsuro is terminally ill, she tries to steer him in the right direction and make amends. A touchingly authentic, moving film from veteran director Yamada that brings both laughter and sadness.
Fee: £7.20 full / £5.60 concessions.
