Martha Marcy May Marlene (15)
Dir: Sean Durkin
Cast: Elizabeth Olsen, John Hawkes, Sarah Paulson 102 mins, 2011, USA
Please note: this was screened in March 2012
Elizabeth Olsen stars as Martha, a young woman who has just escaped the confines of a rural cult in this unsettling psychological thriller. She takes refuge with her yuppie sister Lucy and her new brother in law but paranoid, fearful, and prone to erratic, antisocial behaviour (she thinks nothing of climbing into the couple's bed while they are having sex), she offers little information about the two years she has lost. Flashbacks gradually cast light on her experiences,at the hands of the group's controlling guru figure (a terrifying John Hawkes), and its horrible culture of rape and male supremacy. Featuring a breakout performance from Olsen, this is an incredibly compelling debut from a talent to watch.
4* "Disquieting and ambiguous... It's acted and directed like a sensitive drama, rather than a scary movie, and is all the scarier for it." Guardian
4* "The filmmakers and cast have set themselves a blazing standard, and deserve all the plaudits coming to them." Independent
