The Night of the Hunter: Love/Hate

The Night of The Hunter + Intro (12)

2012 sees the 50th anniversary of Charles Laughton's death. This was his only film as director - a failure on its initial release - only in retrospect did it achieve the masterpiece status it deserves. Robert Mitchum gives a startlingly scary performance as the religious fanatic with LOVE and HATE tattooed on his knuckles roaming the Depression-era South marrying, then murdering, rich widows. When he marries Willa to find a secret stash of cash, he kills her, then relentlessly pursues her children on a terrifying chase. Part horror film, part strange fairy tale, and darkly funny, it contains some of the most otherworldy and haunting images ever committed to film. Unmissable.

Film Historian and Tweeter par excellence @iambags will introduce the screening. We asked him to write this short piece giving some background and insight into the film's enduring relevance and popularity - so big thankyous to him, and we hope it spurs you on to come to the screening.
