The Woman In the Fifth (15) S
Dir: Pawel Pawlikowski
Cast: Ethan Hawke, Kristin Scott Thomas 85 mins, 2011, France/Poland/UK, Subtitled
Please note: this was screened in Feb 2012
Pawel Pawlikowski's follow-up to My Summer Of Love, a complex thriller based on the novel by Douglas Kennedy, tells the story of American writer Tom (Ethan Hawke), who arrives in a distinctly untouristy Paris to mend relations with his estranged wife and daughter. Things don't go to plan however, and when he is spurned and mugged he shacks up in a seedy hotel. Soon after, his world becomes a nightmare when he falls under the spell of a mysterious woman (Kristin Scott Thomas) and after a series of emotional meltdowns and threats of violence, his grip on reality starts to slip. A Kafka-esque, twist-filled tale of alienation, paranoia, and fear.
