Bombay Beach (15)
Dir: Alma Har'el
80 mins, 2011, USA
Please note: this was screened in Feb 2012
Set in the dry desert of Southern California, Bombay Beach was once a getaway oasis. Now, it's a crumbling ghost town, a wasteland that is home to a small, poor community. This hybrid documentary focuses on a trio of its outsiders: an 80-something bootlegger, an African American football hope who fled to the area from Los Angeles after witnessing a gang crime, and a young boy with serious behavioural problems (his parents had an explosives range in their backyard), spaced out by prescription drugs. Interweaved with their stories are surreal, choreographed dance sequences set to music from Beirut and Bob Dylan that somehow say what words cannot. Har'el finds beauty in a place where the American dream has gone to die, and where lonely people have gone to live.
