Young Adult (15)
Dir: Jason Reitman
Cast: Charlize Theron, Patrick Wilson, Patton Oswalt 94 mins, 2011, USA
Please note: this was screened in Feb 2012
Director Jason Reitman (Up In The Air) reunites with his Juno screenwriter Diablo Cody for this equally funny and self-aware tale of thirty-something former prom queen Mavis (Charlize Theron). The still gorgeous Mavis makes a living writing teen fiction but is a desperately unhappy alcoholic, so nearing meltdown, she plots to return to her small hometown to liberate her (now happily married) high school boyfriend (Patrick Wilson). This attempt to relive her glory days doesn't exactly go to plan, however, and the insufferable, aging queen bee enters full-on train wreck mode. A very smart look at narcissism and nostaglia featuring a bracingly unsentimental performance from Theron that happily breaks all the usual rules of safe Hollywood storytelling.
