The Nine Muses (PG)
Dir: John Akomfrah
96 mins, 2010, Ghana/UK
Please note: this is an old screening, first shown in Jan 2012
John Akomfrah expands his celebrated gallery work Mnemosyne in this lyrical, experimental telling of the history of mass migration to postwar Britain. Combining archive footage, striking sequences from the Alaskan wilderness and readings from the likes of Homer, Sophocles, Milton, Joyce and Beckett set to a rich, diverse score, it is a beguiling and beautiful exploration of memory, exile, isolation and the power of elegy. A beautiful, immersive experience that is both a feast for the eyes and the ears and a virtuoso exercise in montage and sound.

A festival of film and music
We're mad about music and film. So much so we've created a new festival dedicated to this most enduring of relationships, and this month there's a focus on the music of the maestro Ennio Morricone.
Bombay Beach
Opening on Friday
Set in the dry desert of Southern California, Bombay Beach was once a getaway oasis. Now, it's a crumbling ghost town, home to a poor community who are the focus of this gorgeous hybrid documentary.
