Lunchtime Talk: Introduction to Plonk - a framework for audio software development

Lunchtime Talks are a series of informal presentations at Watershed's Pervasive Media Studio. They normally take place at 13:00 on a Friday, are free and are open to everybody who is interested in what they do. Come along, bring a sandwich, and get to know more about the Studio community, current and up-coming projects, or residents' work.

Plonk is a new C++ framework for audio software development by Martin Robinson in the Department of Computer Science and Creative Technologies at the University of the West of England, Bristol. Plonk was designed to support teaching and research activities at the university but is being made available to the wider community using a permissive open source license. This talk will introduce the current state of the project and outline its future plans.

Plonk's aims are to be asy to use in the first instance, usable for prototyping and scalable for audio application development (including mobile apps, audio for games and so on).

Plonk comprises building blocks for audio processing (e.g., oscillators, filters) and ways to interconnect these processes into more complex graphs. Plonk is multi-platform, currently running on Mac OS X, iOS and Windows and the intention is to support other platforms in the future.

The Pervasive Media Studio is now located within the Watershed building. Let us know if you'd like a tour of the new space and we'll be happy to show you around! Send an email to jason@pmstudio.co.uk
