Rampart (15)
Dir: Oren Moverman
Cast: Woody Harrelson, Cynthia Nixon, Sigourney Weaver, Steve Buscemi 108 mins, 2011, USA
Please note: this was screened in Feb 2012
Dave Brown (Woody Harrelson in a bravura performance) is a monster created by director Moverman (The Messenger) and writer James Ellroy: a very, very bad cop who prowls the streets of Los Angeles dispensing his own brand of vigilantism. Violent and self-loathing, he's literally gotten away with murder, but when he lands in hot water with the force (Sigourney Weaver and Steve Buscemi in great supporting roles), they see a chance to sacrifice him as evidence they're cleaning up their act, kickstarting a professional and personal (he shares the same roof with two ex wives, Cynthia Nixon and Anne Heche, sisters who are mothers to his daughters) meltdown that impacts everyone. Intense, mesmerising and visually inventive, this is one of the finest crime films of recent years.
