Carancho (The Vulture) (15) S
Dir: Pablo Trapero
Cast: Ricardo Darín, Martina Gusman, Carlos Weber 107 mins, 2010, Argentina/Chile, Subtitled
Please note: this was screened in March 2012
This noir thriller takes a hard look at the dark underbelly of Buenos Aires, a world where bodies are currency and a black market strives to get rich from the personal tragedies that litter the streets. Traffic accidents are an epidemic, and ambulance chasing lawyer Sosa (The Secret In Their Eyes' Ricardo Darin) makes his living fleecing victims out of their money. When he meets an idealistic young doctor (Martina Gusman) hiding demons of her own he is determined to change his ways, but escaping the grim realities of a desperately corrupt system turns out to be much, much more difficult than anticipated. A gripping nocturnal journey into a rarely glimpsed side of Argentinian life (and death).
4* "A brooding, gnarly, grown-up drama from the country's hottest directorial talent..." Time Out
