Hunky Dory: Sunglasses

Hunky Dory (15)

Marc Evans' (My Little Eye, Patagonia) sweet, sincere paean to the pre-punk 1970s is warm-hearted and refreshingly uncynical. It's the start of the sweltering summer of 1976, and the end of term is fast approaching at a Swansea secondary school. Idealistic drama teacher Viv (Minnie Driver) is holding rehearsals for a musical version of The Tempest that both Shakespeare and David Bowie could be proud of - but she faces an uphill struggle as cynical colleagues and hormonal teenagers threaten her production. Featuring a real-life school band (complete with triangles and tambourines - Glee this aint) and stirring versions of songs made famous by Bowie, Nick Drake and ELO among others, Hunky Dory is a fun, rose-tinted piece of nostalgia.
