Michel Legrand Sunday Brunches: Les Demoiselles De Rochefort (PG) S
Dir: Jacques Demy
Cast: Catherine Deneuve, George Chakiris, Françoise Dorléac 126 mins, 1967, France, Subtitled
Please note: this was screened in March 2012
A luminous musical about dreams, romance and destiny which lovingly reworks the classic Hollywood template. Delphine and Solange are two sisters living in Rochefort. Delphine is a dance teacher and Solange teaches the piano - and both are looking for love. Legrand's music is romantic, nostalgic, and varied - the soundtrack features both jazz and rumba. It's impossible not to be delighted by the film's 'beautiful absurdity' - see it and swoon.
