Michel Legrand Sunday Brunches: Ice Station Zebra (U)
Dir: John Sturges
Cast: Rock Hudson, Ernest Borgnine, Patrick McGoohan 145 mins, 1968, USA
Please note: this was screened in March 2012
A tense tale of thrilling Cold War espionage set at a British Arctic outpost. Often described as a 'Cold-War ballet' since its combination of Legrand's grandiose, rhythmically intense score is set against its slowlypaced visual editing - making the overall effect comparable to a ballet. Scored for a massive orchestra of 75 musicians there are subtle, jazz influences woven throughout. Its agitated menace conveys a 'metallic sheen of danger', as one critic calls it. Magnificent.
