In Darkness (15) S
Dir: Agnieszka Holland
Cast: Robert Wieckiewicz, Benno Fürmann, Agnieszka Grochowska 144 mins, 2011, Poland/Germany, Subtitled
Please note: this was screened in March 2012
In Darkness tells the real life World War II story of Socha (Robert Wieckiewicz), a petty thief who grudgingly agrees to offer tenuous protection to a group of Jews in the Lvov sewers for cash. He's Catholic, and anti-semitic, but he needs the money. By helping them, however, he jeopardises the life of his family: will he choose money over morality? Oscar® nominee Holland (Angry Harvest; Europa, Europa) directs with a coolly controlled style (the terrifying subterranean world, where the trapped Jews live life in almost unimaginable circumstances, is extraordinarily claustrophobic) that makes her film harrowing and engrossing in equal measure.
4* - "A fine film." Guardian
4* - "It positively clamours for your attention." Time Out
