The Impossible (12A)
Dir: Juan Antonio Bayona Cast: Ewan McGregor, Naomi Watts, Tom Holland 116 mins, 2012, Spain Please note: this was screened in Jan 2013
Juan Antonio Bayona follows up his debut The Orphanage with this unforgettably powerful drama about a family caught in the mayhem of one of the worst natural catastrophes of our time - and incredibly, it is based on a true story. Naomi Watts and Ewan McGregor play the husband and wife holidaying in Thailand with their three sons, who find themselves ripped apart when an enormous tsunami (which is a relentless, frighteningly realistic recreation) hits their paradise resort, and they must struggle to find each other among thousands of strangers, with horrific injuries. Shot on location in Thailand using real survivors as extras, it is a terrifying vision of disaster, but also a moving portrayal of heroism, family, and strength.
Fee: Screenings before 16:00: £5.50 full/£4.00 concs. Screenings after 16:00: £8.00 full/£6.50 concs.
