Filmic 2013: Amira Kheir Live Score for Sumurun (One Arabian Night) (18)
Dir: Ernst Lubitsch
Cast: Ernst Lubitsch, Pola Negri 85 mins, 1920, Germany
Please note: this was screened in April 2013
Birds Eye View presents...
Italian-Sudanese singer/songwriter Amira Kheir presents a brand new live rescore of Ernst Lubitsch's brilliant adventure One Arabian Night (also called Sumurun). In what turned out to be his last on-camera appearance, Lubitsch stars as Yeggar, a hunchbacked clown who works with a travelling carnival. A lecherous sheik wants the troupe's dancing girl (the iconic Pola Negri) for his own, however, and demands she join his harem, causing much jealousy for his son, and Yeggar, who faithfully follows along. With so many men chasing after one woman, things cannot end well...
Kheir's fusion of Western jazz and folk with traditional Sudanese music is a perfect counterpoint to Lubitsch's ornate film, and she will be performing with a small band, including guests on oud and nay.
Presented in association with Birds Eye View. FFI see amirakheir.com.
Ticket Prices: £8.00 full / £6.50 concessions.
