Gangs of Wasseypur Part 1 (15) S
Dir: Anurag Kashyap
Cast: Manoj Bajpayee, Richa Chadda, Nawazuddin Siddiqui 160 mins, 2012, India, Subtitled
Please note: this was screened in March 2013
This two-part epic (see details of Part 2 here) is a thrilling blend of Bollywood and Hollywood, overturning conventional genres. It's a family saga of three generations driven by a blood feud, chronicling the tough, gritty existence of life in an Indian coal mining town. The film artfully mixes ultra-violence and dark humour - the small-town criminals are not trained hit men, and their comic bumbling lightens the violence. Oozing visual style, with blackly comic dialogue, great performances and a neo-Bollywood soundtrack, there's never a dull moment in this gangland saga by one of India's up and coming directors.
Presented in partnership with Asian Arts Agency.
