Broken (15)

Theatre director Rufus Norris makes his debut with this powerful drama which features an outstanding ensemble cast. At its core is 11-year-old Skunk (Eloise Laurence, who gives an astonishing performance), whose innocence starts to be chipped away when she witnesses a violent attack on a neighbour (Rory Kinnear) at the start of the school holidays. Soon, the aftershocks from the incident widen as more and more people get involved, including Skunk's single dad (Tim Roth) and her teacher Mike (Cillian Murphy), and the entire community is thrust into chaos. A heartwarming exploration of what makes people break down featuring a lovely score from Damon Albarn's Electric Wave Bureau, Broken won the Best Independent Film prize at the BIFAS.
