Jan Svankmajer's Gothic Shorts + Intro (18) S
Dir: Jan Svankmajer Cast: Various 57 mins, 1966 - 1980, Various, Subtitled Please note: this was screened in Dec 2013
This selection of rarely screened Jan Svankmajer shorts features tributes to Horace Walpole's Castle of Otranto and the works of Edgar Allan Poe, revealing Jan Svankmajer's fascination with all things gothic. The re-telling of these macabre tales is rendered particularly uncomfortable by the subjective camera positions that place the audience in the position of the victim.
The screening will be introduced by Michael Brooke, the producer of the BFI's Svankmajer box set and author of a chapter on Eastern European Gothic in a forthcoming BFI Gothic publication.
Here's the running order for the short films:

Want to share Svankmajer with your kids? At our very special Cinékids Workshop - Animating Faces Out of Bits and Bobs, animator and voice-over artist Tom Hillenbrand will show kids how to animate objects like the legendary surrealist Czech artist and filmmaker Jan Svankmajer. Clips from Svankmajer's fantastic film Dimensions of Dialogue will be screened during the workshop.
Tom Hardy is exceptional in this one man show held entirely in the confines of a car. Deeply cinematic - taut, spare and perfect - this thriller will leave you on the edge of your seat.
Singaporean director Anthony Chen deservedly picked up the prestigious Camera d'Or prize for best debut feature at Cannes for this small, tender triumph of a film.
