Do It Ourselves - Ruskin and the Maker Movement
Lunchtime Talks
Please note: This event took place in Dec 2014
Lunchtime Talks are a series of informal presentations at Watershed's Pervasive Media Studio. They normally take place at 13:00 on a Friday, are free and are open to everybody who is interested in what they do. Come along, bring a sandwich, and get to know more about the Studio community, current and up-coming projects, or residents' work.
This lunchtime talk is guest presented by Objects Sandbox producer, Tom Metcalfe
Designer Dean Brown joins us to introduce his current project The 7 Lamps of Making for which he revisited John Ruskin’s essay The 7 Lamps of Architecture (1849) as a guide for 21st century making. Dean draws interesting comparisons between Arts & Crafts (1860 1910) and The Maker Movement. His 7 lightings artifacts, including their methods of making, illustrate Ruskins principles in practice, proposing how a new generation of makers might initiate a dialogue with, and learn from Arts & Crafts theory.
Dean Brown is a London based designer with an interest in cultural artifacts, narrative driven installations and concept retail. Alongside his own practice he was a long term design resident and senior consultant for Fabrica (2010-14) a Design Research Centre based in Treviso, Italy. His work has been exhibited internationally at the Milan Furniture Fair, ICFF New York, London Design Festival, the V&A and Design Museum, London.
The Pervasive Media Studio is located within the Watershed building. Let us know if you'd like a tour and we'll be happy to show you around. Send an email to admin@pmstudio.co.uk
