James Marsh’s (Project Nim, Shadow Dancer) intelligent, sensitive biopic is at once a remarkable chronicle of Stephen Hawking, one of the greatest minds of our time, and a great love story. We first meet Stephen (Eddie Redmayne in a fearless, flawless performance that conveys Hawking’s genius and humanity, not to mention his crackling wit) as a young graduate student in Cambridge in the 60s, his mind already bubbling over with complex theories about time and the origins of the universe. He meets and falls and love with Jane (Felicity Jones, who invests her with a warmth, spirit and determination), but their romance is threatened when, at just 21 years old, he is diagnosed with motor neurone disease and given two years to live. But Jane refuses to let the disease derail their life, kicking Stephen out of depression and into a marriage that will last 25 years and produce three children. Already one of the frontrunners for the 2015 Oscars®, this is a triumphant, riveting film.
