A Most Violent Year

Set in the chilly winter of 1981 in New York (statistically the most dangerous year in the city’s history) Oscar Isaac (Inside Llewyn Davis) is once again pounding the city’s frosty streets, this time as Abel, a self made businessman running a heating oil company. He has just put down a deposit to buy a huge storage facility that will give him complete control of the market. With just 30 days to come up with the rest of the money, it’s right at that moment problems start to mushroom: a district attorney (David Oyelowo) that is breathing down his neck, his wife (Jessica Chastain) is growing fidgety and threatens to call in her mobster family to 'help', and his gas lorries keep getting hijacked by a rival firm. How can he run a clean and fair business against all the odds? This tough minded, bracingly blunt look at the sometimes debilitating cost of doing business is a brilliant third feature from JC Chandor (Margin Call, All Is Lost), who has an eye for street-level interaction rarely seen since the heyday of the late, great Sidney Lumet.
