Foxcatcher

Bennett Miller (Capote, Moneyball) returns with another true story, a tense drama that is his most gripping yet, and one which scooped him the Best Director prize at Cannes last year. Mark (Channing Tatum) is a world champion wrestler who has lived in the shadow of his brother Dave (Mark Ruffalo) for years. He is delighted, then, to be called up one day by John du Pont (Steve Carell, unrecognisable under a false nose), an eccentric, sinister and super rich plutocrat who invites him to train at Foxcatcher Farm on his Pennsylvania home. His aim? To bankroll America’s national wrestling team and use his staggering wealth to win Olympic gold at the 1988 Seoul Olympic Games (despite any real knowledge of the sport). After Mark arrives at the his gym, things go from mildly weird to lethally dangerous – you don’t need to know anything about the true story the film is based on to know it won’t end well. Featuring a trio of great performances, this gripping insight into toxic mentorism, competitive men and the corruptive power of wealth holds a dark mirror to the American dream and does not like what it sees.
