Amour Fou
classified 12A SPlease note: This was screened in Feb 2015
An exquisitely beautiful, disarmingly funny and darkly romantic vision of the last days of nineteenth century German poet Heinrich von Kleist (Christian Friedel), whose learning for love and oblivion (he was on an endless search for a high society woman to join him in a death pact) found fulfilment when he met the beautiful Henriette Vogel (Birte Schnoink). The latest film from director Jessica Hausner (Lourdes), it spoils little to note that it follows the couple through to the bitter end. What really fascinates is the comedy of errors – and manners (it is 1811 after all) – staged along the way as the pair stumble towards their tragic destiny. Immaculately filmed and performed, Amour Fou has been described as a Jane Austen drawing-room comedy as directed by Michael Haneke, and we can’t think of a more apt summary than that – decide for yourself!
