This complex and unblinking debut from British newcomers Daniel and Matthew Wolfe focuses on a fateful day and night in the lives of two teenagers holed up in a Yorkshire caravan park. They are pink-haired, 17-year-old Laila (Sameena Jabeen Ahmed), on the run from her traditional Pakistani family with her boyfriend Aaron (Conor McCarron), a white, Scottish lad. As the couple try to forge some sort of life together on the edge of the moors, two groups of men are prowling nearby towns looking for them. One is four British-Asian thugs, the other two white psychopaths, and all six men have been hired by Laila’s father, who wants her dead for the ‘dishonour’ she has brought upon her family. Beautifully shot on 35mm by famed cinematographer Robbie Ryan (Fish Tank, Red Road), this hugely impressive film (which has some shockingly violent scenes) has plenty to say about family, race and class and is more than worth the pursuit.
