The most assured and genuinely unnerving American horror film in years, David Robert Mitchell’s It Follows is something truly wicked. Devilishly conceived and thrillingly executed, it pays homage to its genre predecessors (John Carpenter, Hideo Nakata) whilst being an entirely fresh and scalp-pricklingly scary exploration of teenage sexual paranoia.

For 19-year-old Jay (Maika Monroe), life should be about school, boys and pool parties. But after a seemingly innocent sexual encounter with her new squeeze Hugh, she immediately finds herself hexed by strange visions and the inescapable sense that someone - or something - is following her. ’It’, a malevolent shape-shifter taking the form of anyone, from beloved relative to a complete stranger, and which no one else can see, is sure to be walking directly toward her, at a steady but moderate pace, with murder on its mind. It can easily be outrun, but it never stops coming: the only certainty it seems is that it won’t stop until she's dead.

If the set up sounds contrived, any sense of scepticism is quickly swept aside by the sheer prowess of the filmmaking as, aided by a deliciously ominous electronic score by Disasterpeace, this all adds up to one chilling cinematic experience that's not willingly going to go away. As the Telegraph says in its 5* review: this is a contemporary horror fan’s dream come true – don’t forget to look behind you!
