As any Coen Brothers fan can attest, the ending of their 1996 masterpiece Fargo is devilishly enigmatic, with Steve Buscemi burying the stolen money forever in the North Dakota snow. To some, it could be the start of an adventure. This is the case for Kumiko (Rinko Kikuchi), a lonely Japanese woman who becomes convinced that this briefcase of money is real, and that it is 'destiny' to retrieve it - barriers of language, money and proper cold weather clothing be damned. So, with a crudely drawn treasure map, work's pinched credit card and limited preparation, she escapes her life in Tokyo and embarks on a foolhardy quest across the frozen tundra of Minnesota in search of her mythical fortune - what will await her when she arrives? Very eccentric and very funny, Kumiko The Treasure Hunter is a tribute to the strange power of film in a new film that is equally charming and haunting - what a joy!
