Far from the Madding Crowd

In advance of Thomas Vinterberg’s new version starring Carey Mulligan and Tom Sturridge (coming in May), we welcome a restored version John Schlesinger’s 1967 adaptation of Thomas Hardy’s 19th-century romance. Julie Christie stars as the beautiful Bathsheba, a woman at odds with the conventions of the time who is being wooed by three rival suitors: the dashing Sergeant Troy (Terence Stamp), the rich and ageing William Boldwood (Peter Finch) and the ever-faithful shepherd Gabriel Oak (Alan Bates). Helped by the shimmering cinematography of Nicolas Roeg, Schlesinger frames the passions and tragedies of the book with the patterns of rural life and the harsh, sodden beauty of the Dorset landscape. After almost 50 years since its release, the film’s bleak beauty and lyricism remain something to behold.
