The Welcome + Discussion
classified 15Please note: This was screened in April 2015
The Welcome offers a fiercely intimate view of life after war: the fear, anger and isolation of post-traumatic stress that affects veterans and family members alike. American veterans who have served in Vietnam, Afghanistan and Iraq are brought together for a five day healing retreat in Oregon with renowned storyteller and mythologist Michael Meade in an attempt to help them come to terms with their trauma of war by expressing themselves through poetry. Each share their heartbreaking story, often interupted by heated debate about issues of race, identity and the realities of being in the military. As the veterans cathartically come closer to personal understanding and the closure of old wounds, the film culminates beautifully with a public performance of their newly written poems and songs. A riveting, enlightening look into the hearts and minds of veterans, a group that is so often forgotten and who are simply in search of home and a path back into communities of neighbours, friends and family - something that is just as topical for UK veterans facing the same problems today.
