The 2008 economic crash shocked the world, but how did experts not see it coming? Crashes have been happening throughout history for centuries, from Tulip Mania in 1637 to the Wall Street crash of 1929. Are we able to recognise a bubble when we are in one? Will the cycle of boom and bust devastate us again in years to come? A mix of live action, animation, puppetry and song, Python Terry Jones’ new documentary Boom Bust Boom walks us through the history of crashes and shows the link between our unstable economy and how economics is taught. It argues that in order to change the economic system, we must start with education: change the teaching, and the new generation of economics will change the system.

Boom Bust Boom features high profile advocates for change such as John Cusack, journalists Paul Mason and John Cassidy, plus leading experts including Andy Haldane, Chief Economist of the Bank of England, and Nobel Prize winners Daniel Kahneman, Robert J Shiller and Paul Krugman.

A discussion with Terry Jones and Ben Timlett will follow the screening.

In association with Bristol Festival of Ideas. This event is part of the build-up to the annual Festival of Economics – an initiative of Festival of Ideas. The Festival of Economics takes place 12-14 November and will be launched in early September.
