The Centre for Appearance Research at the University of the West of England presents The Mask You Live In, a provocative documentary which argues there is a 'boy crisis' gripping America.

Society’s narrow definition of what it means to be a man is having a host of unintended consequences. Pressured by the media, their peer group, and even the adults in their lives, boys confront messages which encourage them to disconnect from their emotions, devalue authentic friendships, objectify and degrade women, and resolve conflicts through violence. Boys are more likely than girls to be diagnosed with a behaviour disorder, be prescribed stimulant medications, quit school, binge drink, commit crime, and take their own lives. Director Jennifer Siebel Newsom asks experts in neuroscience, psychology, sociology, sports and education if we, as a society, are failing our boys and how can we raise a healthier generation of boys and young men.

The screening in W3 will be followed by a discussion about the film with a panel of psychology experts and adolescents.

Part of Bristol Bright Night, a partnership between Festival of Nature, the University of the Bristol and the University of the West of England that celebrates Bristol's place as a home for cutting-edge research.
