Showcase: Pervasive Media Studio Summer Residencies

Showcase: Pervasive Media Studio Summer Residencies

Event

Please note: This event took place in Sept 2015

From sonic seashells to personalised prosthetics, it has been a busy summer in the Pervasive Media Studio. Join us for this unique opportunity to meet with five of our newest residents, all of whom have been undertaking intensive research and development programmes with us over the past few months to develop their ideas, their practice and their projects.

There will be a chance to get a first look at some of the prototype objects and experiences that they have been developing, and to hear from the residents themselves:

Ashley James Brown – Studio Artist in Residence 2015

Creative coder, technologist, sound artist and electronic musician Ashley Brown has been exploring and expanding his artistic practice with us during a two month residency. As part of this process he has kicked off two new projects;

Noise Noise Robot (NNR)

Wearable noise synths that can connect to other users to transform and manipulate the sounds. Patchable, modular neon electronics that have a palpable sense of mischief and mayhem – like wearing a rave on your sleeve.

Sounds of the Sea (working title)

A calm sonic experience that will involve picking up a shell-like object and holding it to your ear, listening in to a specially composed soundscape that connects to the artists’ memories of childhood trips to the sea shore.

Peter Bennett – Studio micro-residency

Pete is a researcher and designer of human-computer interaction. Developing ideas seeded in collaboration with Stuart Nolan, one of our magicians in residence in 2013, Pete is developing an entirely new form of interaction. He is exploring ways to use ‘resonance’ and subconscious micro-movements as controllers for a range of objects and experiences. Collaborating with multiple studio residents he is currently investigating taste-changing food, singing wine glasses, the resonance of evolutionary lifeforms, wobbly origami and the personality of self-bouncing balls.

Roz Dean – New and Emerging Talent resident 2015

Roz is passionate about creating interaction, giving permission to be playful and merging reality and fantasy through events and happenings that often co-exist in numerous digital and physical spaces. Through this residency she has been running experiments and creating games that invite people from all walks of life to step out of the everyday, take a risk and play.

Thomas Williams – New and Emerging Talent resident 2015

Composer and designer Thomas is interested in creating new ways for audiences to experience, and interact with sound and music in physical spaces. Building from experience of an earlier sound and light installation ‘Beacon Choir’, Thomas has been developing an other-worldly responsive environment of idiosyncratic creatures for us to discover.

Vitória Maurício – New and Emerging Talent resident 2015

As lead designer at small robotics startup, Open Bionics, Vitória is developing low-cost bionic hands for amputees using affordable 3D technologies, like 3D scanning, modelling, and printing. During her residency Vitória has been exploring the potential for personalising prosthetic hands, investigating different materials, styles, colours, features and functions as she develops the prosthetics of the future.
