Güeros
classified 15 SPlease note: This was screened in Nov 2015
After pushing his mother to her limit with an ill-advised prank involving a water balloon and a baby buggy, rebellious teen Tomás is sent to live in Mexico City with his big brother Sombra and his roommate Santos. Both students at the university, Tomás finds that the pair spend most of their time lounging at home having boycotted school for the past 163 days as part of an ongoing student strike.
Bored and in search of a cause, the trio embark on an oddball quest when they learn their late father’s musical hero, Epigmenio Cruz (a man who once moved Bob Dylan to tears), is dying. Traversing the city, combating apathy, rebellion and everything in between, Tomás soon fits in, enjoying his various misadventures with them as they seek to pay their last respects to a forgotten rock music legend.
Droll dialogue and nuanced performances coupled with a smart soundtrack and edgy black and white cinematography give this gem a touch of French New Wave cool. It marks Ruizpalacios as a bold new voice in Mexican cinema – this is a retro portrait of Mexico City and of three restless young men searching for a purpose and identity in a city of millions.
