Rife Magazine, our online platform written for young people by young people are running a free masterclass with incredible literary agent Juliet Pickering who'll be giving advice on how to get your novel published and how you can break into the publishing industry. The masterclass is open to 16 – 24 year olds and is a great opportunity to learn new skills, network and get some experience.

WHERE IS IT?: Inside Watershed in the Pervasive Media Studio Events Space. Find your way up through the bar and follow the signs for Pervasive Media Studio, then ring the buzzer.

The talk will start at 6.30pm sharp and it’ll be in the form of a Q&A. Come with questions, queries, pleas for advice, and Juliet will answer them.

WHAT IS IT ABOUT?: Literary agent Juliet Pickering will be dispensing invaluable advice to you about how to get published, what you need to do to get your submission ready, the do’s and don’ts of approaching agents, what an agent’s role is, how to become a literary agent, why you might need a literary agent and how to get their attention.

WHO IS IT FOR?: Up-and-coming novelists, writers of any sort, journalists, people with ideas for books, people wanting to get into the publishing industry, future literary agents, people who have written one word and want to write more, people who have written 100,000 words and need to know what to do next, and everyone else in-between.

WHO IS DOING THE TALK?: Juliet Pickering studied English Literature at university before working for Waterstones as a bookseller and fiction buyer. She joined A P Watt in 2003, working up from combing the slush pile, franking mail and scanning royalty statements, to becoming an Associate Agent in 2007.

Juliet joined Blake Friedmann in 2013 and her authors have been shortlisted for Costa, Commonwealth, Orwell Prize, Green Carnation and Guardian First Book Awards. Her interests range from literary and well-written commercial fiction to mystery, crime and psychological suspense. She also represents many non-fiction writers across the board (although not for self-help, business or sport), including memoir, pop culture, social history, feminist and political commentary, cookery and food writing, and all sorts inbetween.

WHAT NOW?: It’s free, but because we know this will be busy, and everyone will want the time and space to pitch their specific novels, which you can do, but you know, being sensitive to the others in the room, we’re only offering limited spaces to people. So, if you want to come, you have to RSVP, by emailing the editor, Nikesh and asking for a space. We encourage people from a BAME background to come.
