Snowcake (15)
Dir: Marc Evans
Cast: Alan Rickman, Sigourney Weaver 111 mins, 2006, Canada/UK
Please note: this is an old screening, first shown in Sept 2006
Snowcake, a beautifully bittersweet drama, follows Englishman Alex Hughes (Alan Rickman), a man haunted by a dark past, travelling through Ontario. Just after picking up feisty hitchhiker Vivienne, he has an accident from which he emerges unscathed, but his passenger dies. Driven by guilt he finds and helps Vivienne’s autistic mother Linda (Sigourney Weaver) with the funeral preparations and becomes drawn into her unusual world. Two forceful performances from Rickman and Weaver and a stunning setting by Canada's Lake Superior, makes Snowcake an emotionally powerful and haunting drama, spiked with wicked humour.
...director Marc Evans shows a light touch with Snowcake and Sigourney Weaver delivers an infectious performance as Linda, full of childlike abandon. A dour Alan Rickman is her perfect counterpoint and their constant grating on each other’s nerves creates a delicious mix of cool humour and heart-warming drama...Ultimately it’s a deeply moving, life-affirming tale - the many scathing one-liners are just icing on the cake.
