New Talent Residencies Showcase

New Talent Residencies Showcase

Talk

Please note: This event took place in Oct 2016

From Playable Prints, to curious playgrounds, to a national treasure hunt of Britain’s steel towns, it has been a busy summer in the Pervasive Media Studio. Join us for this unique opportunity to meet with our four New Talent Residents, all of whom have been developing their ideas and practice, through an intensive three-month research and development programme. There will be a chance to get a first look at some of the prototype games, prints and experiences they have been developing, and to hear from the residents themselves:

Jono Sandilands (pictured) is a graphic artist exploring design, printmaking and screen-based-technology, embedding interaction and games into physical artworks. During this residency, Jono has been exploring different methods of embedding interactivity into his playable prints, including conductive ink and electroluminescent (EL) ink.

One Five West is an artist duo - Sophie Bullock and Anna Horton. They make playful interactive artworks for public spaces. Alongside researching early playground designs, Sophie and Anna have spent a lot of time outside developing collaborative games encouraging strangers to play and collaborate together. One Five West’s work responds to existing city architecture, adapting it to invite citizens to play, enabling social and creative exchanges.

Tenaya Steed is a multidisciplinary artist who tells true stories about everyday people. Tenaya is fascinated with the Japanese born notion of national treasures; collecting and sharing oral histories and objects that make up the shared identity of a place or community. She has been researching the national treasures of Britain’s steel towns, beginning in Scunthorpe. Tenaya is currently working with the town’s residents to develop a wearable toolkit for collecting and sharing stories. Simultaneously, she’s looking at ways to create a national treasure trail, so anyone, anywhere, can explore the stories they uncover.

We would be delighted if you can join us to learn more about the artists and ideas, and celebrate as we draw this year’s New Talent Residency programme to a close.

Alumni Pervasive Media Studio residents Interactive Scientific have supported the New Talent Residency programme.

This event will have BSL interpretation throughout.
