"We drive into the future using only our rear view mirror" Marshall McLuhan

In the 1960s Canadian academic and thinker Marshall McLuhan revolutionised the way we think about technology and culture in books such as 'Understanding Media'. He is most widely known for his aphorism The Medium is the Message and his potent prediction of The Global Village. A manifestation of this global village one could argue is the world wide web. However McLuhan's theories did not predict a technological utopia where local culture is consumed globally or vice versa.

To mark the centenary of his birth we are hosting a day of seminars with colleagues of McLuhan's, special events including music journalist Paul Morley in conversation, and a live performance of a new sound artwork. We are also devoting our Sunday Brunches to McLuhan's influence on film and will be publishing video interviews and new writing throughout the month online.
