The Boat that Moves Me

Aikaterini Gegisian

‘The boat that moves me’ is a personal take on digital storytelling and on what a Bristol Story might be. It was filmed at the Underfall Yard (a historic dock yard) as a continuous take. The circular camera movement is juxtaposed to an interview with a traditional boat maker that is intermingled with the artist’s own narration. The story was not made in a specific workshop but as part of my role as Bristol Stories Coordinator.

While thinking of making this story, I kept wondering what I could possible say about my life in Bristol? Having been a guest for a long time but without really building a life here. And what can you really tell about a place when you are continuously moving around? I suppose, I have to start with the fact that it has all been an accident.

I get to know a city by walking around it, observing and discovering. Getting to call something a home or at least familiar involves some type of mapping of the neighbourhoods, of the streets and little alleys. Since I first moved here it has been impossible to make sense of the city, I kept feeling lost not recognising the different areas, not being able to unravel its geography. How can you map a city full of hills that is divided by a river? I often wondered. I suppose naming them could be a good start.

This corner of Bristol is the first place in the city that I fell in love with. Is the first place that the river and the hills, the houses and the water made sense to me. This is the viewpoint from which the city does not look like a foreign entity anymore but like a place where I could belong.
