Whilst working on the show, Sam, new to acting, was watching another production with some of the more experienced actors. She felt embarassed because she couldn’t understand the show, but was relieved to find the other actors couldn’t understand it either!

This story was made over five days at Access Creativity Theatre Arts (ACTA) in Bedminster, Bristol, to celebrate the organisation’s 21st birthday. Participants were ACTA workers.

It was led by Clodagh Miskelly, Eileen Haste and Paddy Uglow on a theme of “21 years of acta” and was supported by Bristol’s Museums, Galleries & Archives.

Transcript

Despite my fears in the summer of 2004 I joined a group of five other women from Bristol – new friends and old to create a show to take to the International Community Theatre Festival in Rotterdam.

Despite my fears, after months of devising sessions we ended up with a play called For Love Nor Money about the lives of three very different women who grew up together.

Despite my fears, in March 2005 we barded a plane at Bristol Airport bound for Amsterdam.

Despite my fears the set, cast and staff members arrived safely and we weren’t detoured through darkest Peru!

Despite my fears we were given a fantastic welcome and everyone did everything they could to make us feel at home.

Despite my fears and a technical problem we had a sell out audience. Although I did spend the entire day trying not to be physically sick with nerves.

Despite my fears I overcame my terror and made it on to the stage.

Despite my fears the audience understood us.

Despite my fears they laughed at our jokes.

Despite my fears we remembered our lines.

Despite my fears the show was a huge success.
