squidsoup is a loose federation of artsts, musicians and interactive designers. The personnel for this project are Gareth Bushell, James Lane and Anthony Rowe. squidsoup was formed in 1997 with the aims of pushing at the boundaries of interactive design, and exploiting the immersive and emotional potential of digital media. They operate in both the commercial and non-commercial sectors. Their experimental work has been shown in festivals, seminars and galleries around the world including ISEA (electronic art symposium, Japan 2002), SONAR (music festival in Barcelona, 2001) and SIGGRAPH (technology and art fair, USA 2001), as well as several online exhibitions. Recognition includes an EMMA (Best On-line Art 2000) and a BAFTA nomination (Interactive Arts 2002). They have received grants from the Arts Council of England (2002), London Arts Board (2002), Cornerhouse (2002-3), and the 4th Clarks Digital Bursary (2002). squidsoup are also currently working on a forward-thinking educational project, funded by Nesta Futurelab.

Gaz Bushell began working with squidsoup 4 years ago, an ex-computer game junkie attempting to carry game technology into the art world. He has an MA in Digital Art from Middlesex University (2000) and a BA in Fine Art, Sculpture.

James Lane comes from a background of visual art and design. With a first degree and consequent career in Photography and Video production (London College of Printing, 1992) he diversified into animation and ultimately interactive design via a Masters in Design for Interactive Media at Middlesex University (1997). As a founder of Squidsoup James is continually concerned with asking questions of the aesthetics of interactive media and pushing it to get a satisfactory answer.

Anthony Rowe's background includes time as an engineer, teacher, illustrator, flamenco guitarist and long distance single-handed sailor (he still holds an obscure world record for crossing the Atlantic alone). These experiences helped sow the seeds of his passion for moulding interactivity, sound and virtual space into immersive experiences. Anthony is a founder and leading member of squidsoup. He has an MA in Interactive Design from Middlesex University (1997) and a BSc in Mechanical Engineering and Mathematics from Reading University (1985).
