Heart of Lightness by Bristol-based artist Lucy Turner, commissioned by Watershed

Posted on Fri 23 April 2021

If you happen to be down by the Harbourside and walking past Watershed in the next couple of weeks you will spot some beautiful new artwork on Watershed’s downstairs windows.

This series of stunning illustrations and a poem, called Heart of Lightness, has been created by Lucy J Turner (a Bristol-based artist, digital illustrator, activist, creator and Rife alumni) to bring the outdoor space to life as part of the planned opening of Undershed, our new outdoor bar by the Harbourside. The work celebrates people, togetherness and community - perfect themes for Bristol as we come out of this lockdown period.

Our new outside bar on the Harbourside, Undershed will (hopefully) open officially on Wed 19 May with its own menu of tasty vegan and vegetarian bar snacks as well as hot and cold drinks, beers and wines.

Clare Reddington, CEO, Watershed says:

“We are so excited to open Undershed and welcome you to our new harbourside space – having a presence downstairs is something we’ve been looking forward to for a while, and now is the perfect time to add outdoors space. We love the joy and the spirit of Lucy’s illustrations - which sum up what Watershed is about – being together. We hope to see you there very soon”

Lucy Turner says:

"My aim for this piece was to bring Bristol together after such a long period of separation. I wanted passers-by to feel joy, unity and hope for the future when they look at my illustrations. I use art to help heal from trauma and we know all too well the last year has been traumatic for so many of us for so many reasons but especially within the Black community. I wanted to convey the love, joyfulness and strength our communities have managed to uphold. Togetherness was a huge theme in the illustrations as I've looked forward to being together with my friends and loved ones for what has felt like an eternity".

Undershed will host up to 48 people and serve tasty new bar snacks, created by Watershed’s Head Chef Chris Warren, including Naked Nachos, Crispy Oyster Mushrooms with Korean ketchup, Curry Fries and Spiced Potato Scotch Eggs.

More details about the bar and how to book will be available soon – so stay tuned!

Heart of Lightness was commissioned in April 2021 by Watershed with support from Arts Council England.
