South West Artists Residencies 2011

Two residencies that enable artists to produce experimental works in a collaborative environment.

Watershed has commissioned two artists’ residencies at the Pervasive Media Studio, to provide artists with the space and time to develop their ideas and explore digital technologies in an unpressured environment. The 2011 commissions were supported by Arts Council England, and provided artists with the opportunity to research, produce, and present projects that combined art, technology, and culture.

There were two residencies offered: a Music and Sonic Art Residency which was additionally supported by Sound and Music, St George’s Bristol, and conductor Charles Hazlewood; and an Open Residency which was open to artists from varied disciplines.

Guerilla Dance Project were selected for the Music and Sonic Art Residency. The innovative dance company comprises of choreographer Laura Kriefman, composer Tim Bamber, and interactive experience designer Robin Ray. GDP set out to develop a new performance that explores how musical compositions that reflect the surroundings combined with dance, can encourage us to reflect on the beauty that permeates our everyday.

The Open residency was awarded to writer Sharon Clark and technologist Tom Burton to develop The Stick House, a piece of theatre that fuses live performance, pervasive media, and music to create a beautiful and darkly haunting fairy tale for adults. Clark and Burton will use their residency to explore ways in which psychological effectors such as low-level noise, Victorian mentalism, and pervasive technologies can be used to create more immersive experiences for audiences.

Both residencies are accompanied by journals, which detail the progress of the projects alongside providing a unique insight into the ideas and thought-processes of the artists.

Artists Residencies 2011 is a Watershed initiative, delivered by iShed and supported by Arts Council England, Sound and Music, St George’s Bristol and conductor Charles Hazlewood.
