re you a young, aspiring filmmaker? Whether you’ve already taken the first steps in your film and TV career or want to know where to start, Inside Film is a day you won’t want to miss! 

With some of the most exciting young filmmakers in the South West, studio and development opportunities in the region and the chance to hear directly from some of the most exciting industry experts, Inside Film is going to be a day to get inspired, connected and develop your career in film and TV.  

Here’s what you can look forward to at this year’s event: 

Films by emerging South West based filmmakers – Cinema 1, 12:30 – 13:30   

A showcase of short films made by new and emerging filmmakers between the ages of 16-25 from across the South West. Featuring a range of genres and styles from animation to documentary and films made independently, whilst in education or as commissions.  The lineup includes:

A selection of BFI NETWORK shorts – Cinema 1, 14:00-15:00

BFI NETWORK is the BFI’s programme for developing and funding emerging filmmakers across the UK and at this screening they’ll be sharing some of the latest short films that they’ve produced in the South West to show you what the next. The filmmakers and members of the BFI NETWORK South West team will also be around to talk about how the films got made and letting you know about what opportunities the NETWORK team have coming up for you to get involved in.  Hosted by BFI Network Producer Jess Wheeler 

Business of Film – Waterside 3, 15:30-16:30 

This panel discussion will highlight current training and entry-level opportunities to become professional crew members, with a focus on Bristol/South West opportunities. Hear from a panel of trainees and new and emerging crew who can share their experiences and insight. 

The panellists include:

  • Prince Taylor (host) – Executive Producer at Latent Pictures with a history of work in inclusion, community building and bespoke talent focused project management. His journey on paper is quite non linear but he is an advocate for creating environments where goals can be achieved and ideas realised over time through sustainable practice. He is still figuring it all out and doing his best to enjoy the journey.
  • Imoleayo Ogunade – A recent law graduate who has recently decided to make a career change over to the fun side aka the TV/film industry. Their interest for tv and film started very young due to the help of a film fanatic family friend and their interest for the industry has been growing ever since. Starting with the BFI Academy Watershed and growing to Screenskills First Breaks program, resulted in them working on their first HETV drama.
  • Afua Owusu-Ansah – Afua is a researcher working at Five Mile Films. Afua came to Bristol in 2018 to study Sociology and then got onto the Channel 4 Production Training Scheme through which they worked at Plimsoll from May 2021 to December 2022.
  • Amy Burns – Amy is currently working as a researcher for Thames TV for an entertainment show, but her background is in documentaries and she previously did a traineeship with Channel 4. Before her life in TV, she studied musical theatre and has a huge history of working with children. 
  • Simon Sofowora – Simon is a Talent Researcher at Gritty Talent. His work focuses on connecting talented off-screen filmmakers from underrepresented backgrounds in the industry to the independent production companies and broadcasters who aim to improve their standards of diversity, equity and inclusion. Currently in his third year of his Filmmaking course at UWE Bristol, Simon is also an avid filmmaker.

Spotlight on: Tobi Kyeremateng – Waterside 3, 17:15-18:00 

Tobi Kyeremateng is a film and TV producer from South London. Working across narrative, documentaries, and branded content, Tobi has produced work internationally for BBC, British Vogue, Channel 4, Dove, i-D, Netflix, Nike, NOWNESS, Sky Arts, and more. In 2020 she was invited to become a Fellow of the Royal Society of the Arts and in 2021 was selected as a recipient of the inaugural Netflix Documentary Talent Fund. In 2022, Tobi was featured on the Forbes 30 Under 30 Europe list in Arts & Culture and was selected for the 2022 BAFTA Elevate cohort for producers.

Tobi will be in conversation with Oona Chanfi. Oona is an actor, filmmaker and photographer who works across theatre and film. She is currently working at Little By Little Films and at Tobacco Factory Theatres.

Action Xtreme Presents: Action Filmmaking with special guestsfollowed by networking – Waterside 3, 18:00-19:45 

Whether it’s your favourite genre or a bit of a guilty pleasure, we all love seeing a high-speed chase or slick fight scene. If you love action films but have thought that making your own might be out of reach, this panel will break down how you can started in the genre without needing a blockbuster budget, looking at topics including using easily-accessible kit, bringing diverse voices into the genre and more. 

The panel will be hosted by Ti Singh and includes:

  • Chee Keong Cheung – Writer, director and producer who currently is Head of Distribution at Sovereign Film Distribution and CEO of Action Xtreme
  • Gabriela Staniszewska – Gabriela is a multi-award winning filmmaker living and working in Bristol. Major influences of her work in her adult life include James Cameron, Steven Spielberg, Nora Ephron, Yasujiro Ozu and Sergei Parajanov as well as both live action and animated classics of Japanese cinema. She works primarily in horror, action and sci-fi, with a small local and female-led collective.
  • Soo Cole – Soo met a number of people making their own films and during the organising of the Shaolin Cultural event with Shaolin Temple UK, Soo first mentioned her idea of setting up a martial arts and action film festival. In January 2016 she set about co-organising the first Fighting Spirit Film Festival. Fighting Spirit Film Festival is now in its 8th year. Soo continues to direct the festival and several of the short film makers have gone on to be in, collaborate and make further films including features.
  • Sam Mak – Sam Started training wushu (Chinese martial arts) aged 4, inspired by HK cinema and martial arts films and became World Junior Wushu Champion in 2006. He made his feature film debut as an actor and stunt performer in the World’s End (2012) directed by Edgar Wright. Other acting and stunt credits include Tomb Raider (2018), Gangs of London (season 1, 2020) and Accident Man 2 (2022). Choreography credits include Accident Man 2, several FKA Twigs music videos including Sad Day (2020), Kingsman: Measure of a Man (2022) and Don’t Judge Me (2021).

This session is brought to you in partnership with Action Xtreme, the first major action studio in the UK, with a focus on grassroots talent growth, development and training, and a remit to develop franchisable film, TV and online action content.
