Paul Thomas Anderson enters the awards season with the exquisitely crafted and performed Phantom Thread. It was given a small release - just under 200 prints - and delivered a respectable £650K nationally. At Watershed it wasn’t the barnstorming performance of Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri but a very respectable above national average opening weekend. Whilst Phantom Thread doesn’t have the visceral punch of Three Billboards it has plenty of sophisticated seductive elegance, which I think will benefit from word of mouth. Already it is doing as strong business on Monday and Tuesday. This is not just a weekend film!
Elsewhere it is a matter of juggling demand from The Post, Early Man and the ever popular Three Billboards. It was great to see over 100 people for Boogie Nights, the first in the 35mm retrospective of Paul Thomas Anderson.
From this friday we are still juggling most of the above - having dropped The Post - and adding Andrey Zvyagintsev’s Oscar nominated Loveless.
