Writer-director Olivier Assayas (Clouds of Sils Maria, Personal Shopper) returns with a sharply written comedy set amidst the bohemian intelligentsia of the Parisian publishing world.
A seductive tale of sex, lies and literature, it follows the romantic and emotional fallout that results when controversial writer Leonard (Vincent Maxaigne) begins blurring the line between fact and fiction, taking inspiration from his real-life love affairs, including a passionate fling with an actress (Juliette Binoche) who happens to be married to his editor (Guillaume Canet). It's also a snapshot of a Parisian society about to succumb to the digital revolution; a sharp examination of how the world is changing and how technology is affecting all aspects of modern living seen through the lens of the publishing world (books vs e-books, criticism vs blogging, libraries vs Google books, considered opinion vs Facebook likes...).
Enjoyably talky and deliciously smart, Non-fiction is a brilliant balance between dry wit, keen observations on modern life, and the tensions between art, commerce and technology.
