Sound Illusions
Lunchtime Talks
Please note: This event took place in Feb 2017
Lunchtime Talks are a series of informal presentations at Watershed's Pervasive Media Studio. They normally take place at 13:00 on a Friday, are free and are open to everybody who is interested in what they do. Come along, bring a sandwich, and get to know more about the Studio community, current and up-coming projects, or residents' work.
If you’ve ever thought “Sound is sound, and I just want my movie to sound good”, then this Lunchtime Talk is for you.
Studio resident, Tarim has been working with the Pervasive Media Studio since it opened, and is involved with a number of different installation projects and technology platforms that explore embedding playful technology into the world. For this week’s Lunchtime Talk, Tarim will join forces with his latest collaborator Alex Jones, to share their thoughts on why our sense of hearing isn't as simple as it may seem.
Their collaboration was born out the success of one of Tarim’s recent projects 'Flight Paths' which involved creating a system where sounds can be moved around a space as part of a live performance. Together Tarim and Alex have taken on the challenge set by UWE’s research internship program to research and develop an object-based audio spatialisation system for under £1000. The multi-dimensional sound, which object-based audio spatialisation allows, can provide amazing richness and depth. You feel like you’re truly inside the story with sound coming from all directions, including overhead.
This Lunchtime Talk will illustrate some of the stranger and immersive aspects of hearing, using sound illusions and demonstrating some of the possible effects within this type of sound system.
The Pervasive Media Studio is located within the Watershed building. Let us know if you'd like a tour and we'll be happy to show you around. Send an email to studio@watershed.co.uk
