Hidden Figures

The inspiring true story about the women who made the NASA space programme possible.

Segregation, racism, sexism: none of it stopped three African-American women who were the brains behind the 1960's space race. Katherine Johnson (Taraji P. Henson), Mary Jackson (Janelle Monae) and Dorothy Vaughn (Octavia Spencer) are three brilliant women working for NASA known as the 'Human Computers'.

Despite their genius, segregation forces the three to work in an outbuilding, at lower pay, often entirely forgotten about by those within the agency. It almost seems their many talents will go unnoticed. Until one fateful day...

The team at NASA who are responsible for beating Russia in the space race just can't quite nail the maths. The women are brought in to try their hand, but despite their newly acquired status and intelligence, they struggle against wave after wave of assumptions and attacks based on their gender and colour. A brilliant untold true story, we celebrate the amazing achievements of these women in a society in the throes of change.

The Wed 15 March 17:45 screening will be introduced by UWE's Dr Antonia Tzemanaki, Research Fellow in Surgical Robotics, and followed by a Q&A with other women in science. Presented by Bristol Women in Robotics and UWE.
