Raise The Bar
“Exuding originality…accessible…atmospheric” ★★★★ - Intermission
"Raise The Bar exemplifies how spoken word has no fixed style—from the conversational to the melodic, the comedic to the poignant." - Epigram
Raise the Bar is back for the October edition of its acclaimed spoken word event, and this month also marks Raise the Bar’s 3rd birthday! To celebrate the occasion an all-star line-up will be coming to Bristol including MiKo Berry, Sara Hirsch and Daniel Piper! Hosted by Craft-D and Connor Macleod.
With its regular monthly slot at Watershed, each Raise the Bar show promises to be a completely different and unique experience. As there are FOUR headliners this month for an extra special event, there will be no open mic on this occasion.
One of the most influential UK spoken word performers, MiKo Berry has performed all over the world and won both the Scottish Poetry Slam Championship and the European Slam Championship, arriving fourth in the World Slam the same year. His incredible storytelling, energetic stage presence and natural command of language make him one of the best live spoken word performers in the world.
Also a former European Slam Champion in 2016 and winner of the UK Slam Championship, as well as a finalist in the BBC Slam this year, Sara Hirsch is an immense writer and performer aiming to gradually dismantle the patriarchy, one poem at a time. Her second collection ‘Louder Than Words’ was published by BX3 this Summer following her debut collection ‘Still Falling’ with Burning Eye the year before.
Daniel Piper is a comedian, writer and poet, who this year was crowned the Scottish National Slam Champion, and went on to finish runner-up in the World Slam Championship. He has been seen/heard on national TV/radio and has performed across the UK at festivals including Latitude, Bestival and Edinburgh International Book Festival, as well as written and performed two smash-hit Edinburgh shows - Daniel Piper Is In Four Gangs (2016) and Daniel Piper's Day Off (2017).
