Googie Withers stars as a young woman who flouts convention by choosing to run the farm she inherited, and rejecting the man she is expected to marry...

Set on the sheep farms of Kent's Romney marshes at the turn of the century, Joanna Godden (Googie Withers) is left her father's farm after he dies. Strong-willed and determined to go her own way, she decides to run the farm herself, outraging the whole shire - and in particular her neighbour, one of the three suitors whom Joanna finds herself torn between...

A unique project for Ealing within this period, the film was shot on location by cinematographer Douglas Slocombe, who captures the mysteries of the marsh beautifully.
